Aleocharinae are the largest subfamily of Staphylinidae.

.. . . Dinaraea angustula. Subfamiliy Aleocharinae. Family Rove beetles (Staphylinidae).   Finally a rove beetle with a generic name. There are many species in the subfamily Aleocharinae. But there are only two species with such lumps on the last and second last tergite. Found between decaying leaves. Length of about 4 mm. Tim Struyve thanks for the help and information. ..   Cypha spec. Tribe . Subfamiliy Aleocharinae. Family Rove beetles (Staphylinidae).   Shield shield about 1.5 mm long. They can not be determined from a picture. Cypha is well recognized by the shape. Wide elytra, short head and a conical abdomen. Thin legs and antennae. Photos 21-7-2017.

Subfamily Omaliinae. 
These rove beetles are somewhat broader in shape than the most Staphylinidae and the have somewhat longer elytra.

..   Anthobium atrocephalum, formely Lathrimaeum atrocephalum. Tribus Anthophagini. Subfamily Omaliinae. Family Rove beetles (Staphylinidae). This small beetle (about 3, 4 mm) you don't easily recognize as a rove beetle.  Photos 15-11-2010.

.. . Lesteva spec. Tribus Anthophagini. Subfamily Omaliinae. Family Rove beetles (Staphylinidae).  There are similar species. In the Netherlands: Lesteva hanseni, Lesteva longoelytrata, Lesteva monticola, Lesteva pubescens, Lesteva punctata, Lesteva sicula, Lesteva sicula subsp, Compsomyces lestevae. The heart-shaped pronotum reminded me of a ground beetle. Just like this beetle (edge of the pond) they can be found in wet moss on the bank. The species are about 4 mm. Photo 4-5-2018.

..   Olophrum piceum. Tribus Anthophagini.Subfamily Omaliinae. Family Rove beetles (Staphylinidae). Not in the garden, but in the dunes about 4 km from our house. A reddish-brown beetle. Length from 4.1 to 6 mm. He looks like the Olophrum fuscum rare in the Netherlands, which is dark brown to almost black. Photos 25-13-2017.

Onderfamilie Oxytelinae.

.. .   Anotylus spec. Subfamily Oxytelinae. Family Rove beetles (Staphylinidae).   A name of the species is not possible. The species in the Netherlands are: Anotylus clypeonitens, A. complanatus, A. fairmairei, A. insecatus, A. inustus, A. maritimus, A. mutator, A. nitidulus, A. rugosus, A. saulcyi, A. sculpturatus, A. tetracarinatus.  The Anolytus in the picture is about 4 mm long.  Photos 22-4-2014.

.. Carpelimus spec. Subfamily Oxytelinae. Family Rove beetles (Staphylinidae).   I found this rove beetle in the moss. According to the "Soortenregister" (species registry) there are 22 species in the Netherlands, including two exotic. Most of the subfamily Oxytelinae are from a picture not to identify. The Carpelimus in the picture is about 2.5 mm long.  Photos 8-3-2014.

Subfamily Pselaphinae. 
Deze onderfamilie werd eerst als een aparte familie Pselaphidae beschouwd. The most species of the subfamily Pselaphinae have clubbed antennae. They are small and compact.

..    Probably Euplectus sp. Subfamily pselaphinae. Family Rove beetles (Staphylinidae).   A subfamily of tiny rove beetles. This Rove was slightly larger than a mm. They eat other small insects such as springtails and mites. They live in damp places like rotten wood and leaf litter. This beetle I found on the compost heap. Photos 07-04-2012.

Subfamily Staphylininae.

.. . .   Ocypus cf brunnipes. Subfamily Staphylininae. Family Rove beetles (Staphylinidae).  cf. : Most likely but not certain.  Other Ocypusspecies in the Netherlands are  Ocypus aeneocephalus, Ocypus ater, Ocypus globulifer, Ocypus melanarius, Ocypus ophthalmicus, Ocypus picipennis and the largest Ocypus olens. A dark Rove beetle. Only the legs and a part of the antennas are red. This rove beetle is much larger than the most rove beetles. Length 12 to 15 mm. Photos 7-6-2009.

..   Devil's coach-horse beetle, Cocktail beetle Not in the garden, but in the dunes about 4 km from our house. An entirely black rove beetle. The large rove beetle is pictured in threatening posture with the tail up like a scorpion. It can also have a white smelly liquid separation to scare an enemy. With its strong jaws it can bite a human. It feeds on other insects, snails and worms. This is the largest rove beetle of the Netherlands. About 22 - 30 mm. Europe. Introduced in America and Australia. Photos 12-10-2014. German: Schwarze Moderkäfer. French: Ocype odorant.

..   Tasgius spec. Subfamily Staphylininae. Family Rove beetles (Staphylinidae).  Tasgius is an offshoot of the Ocypus group. They are very similar. The species in these pictures can not be determined. There are seven species in the Netherlands: Tasgius ater, Tasgius globulifer, Tasgius melanarius, Tasgius morsitans, Tasgius pedator, Tasgius winkleri, Tasgius winkleri.  This dark, large rove beetle is 20 mm. .. . Philonthus spec. Subfamily Staphylininae. Family  Rove beetles (Staphylinidae).  A beautiful shiny black beetle. About 1 cm. It 's a nimble insect.  Photo 25-9-2011.

..   Philonthus Philonthus cognatus. Subfamily Staphylininae. Family  Rove beetles (Staphylinidae).  Approximately 1 cm. This Philonthus can be determined by the two points on the side of the thorax and on the orange bottom of the first segment of the antenna. On the photo below indicated with red arrows. .. Quedius spec. Subfamily Staphylininae. Family Rove beetles (Staphylinidae). I have found this rove beetle on the ground under rotten wood. There are approximately 70 species of the genus Quedius in Central Europe. You'll find them just as this rove beetle on the ground with faded leaves.  Length of this beetle approximately 8 mm.  Photos 30-3-2010.

Subfamily Steninae.
Species of the subfamily Steninae have very large eyes.

Stenus spec. Subfamily Steninae. Family Rove beetles (Staphylinidae). In this picture you see a bug (Nabis) and another short rove beetle. This is a Stenus spec. The eyes are large. I found them together in a shell of a horse chestnut.  Beginning of March 2009.

..   Stenus spec. Subfamily Steninae. Family Rove beetles (Staphylinidae). This Stenus has pale legs. Maybe Stenus impressus, but there are more possibilities.  About 4-5 mm. Photos 16-10-2016.

Subfamily Tachyporinae.
Usually smooth and shiny rove beetles, which are identified by a large, broad pronotum and a relatively small, rounded head.

..   Lordithon. Subfamily Tachyporinae. Family Rove beetles (Staphylinidae). In the Netherlands there are the following five species: Lordithon exoletus, Lordithon lunulatus, Lordithon pulchellus, Lordithon thoracicus, Lordithon trinotatus. I found this rove beetle in a smoky polypore (Bjerkandera adusta). A black head, an orange pronotum and a silvery spot on the elytra. Photos 6-4-2018.

..   Tachyporus hypnorum. Subfamily Tachyporinae. Family Rove beetles (Staphylinidae). Length 3 - 4 mm. Foto's 24-11-2013.

.. Tachyporus. Subfamily Tachyporinae. Family Rove beetles (Staphylinidae). A name is not possible this time. Length of the rove beetle is about 3,5 mm. Photos 16-2-2014.

..   Tachyporus. Subfamily Tachyporinae. Family Rove beetles (Staphylinidae). Possible Tachyporus chrysomelinus or Tachyporus dispar. Are indistinguishable on picture (hair on the back edge of the wing cases). Length of this beetle is about 3.5-4 mm. Photos 22-11-2016.

Subfamily Xantholininae.

.. . .    Xantholinus spec. Subfamily Xantholininae. Family Rove beetles (Staphylinidae). I found it on the ground under a decaying piece of wood. You can find them like this rove beetle on the ground between the decaying leaves. Length of this beetle about 8 mm.  Two years later I saw another walk on the tiles.  Photos 12-3-2011 and 11-4-2009.
